The media made much of the defection of retired UUP Councillor and former British Army officer Harvey Bicker to Fianna Fail (FF) – a party which still styles itself as an Irish Republican party.
The truth is that FF is a pragmatic party of power and as Mr Bicker has business interests in the Republic and may, it is believed, even live in the Republic, his decision to join FF is not as surprising as it first seems.
Moreover, when he was in the UUP Mr Bicker was known to be on the liberal wing of the party and somewhat of a maverick.
